What is Habitat for Humanity?

• A nonprofit, Christian housing ministry that believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.
• We build and repair houses all over the world using volunteer labor and donations. 
• Our partner families purchase these houses through no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans or innovative financing methods.

How does it work?

• Through volunteer labor and donations.
• Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
• Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans.
• The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.

How are families selected to receive Habitat houses?

• Families in need of decent shelter apply.
• The affiliate’s family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the loan.
• Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection.
• Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.

Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.  Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.
