Description

The American Red Cross and its partners have launched an initiative that aims to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in five years with the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

The Springfield Fire Department is a local partner in the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.

The Springfield Fire Department & Red Cross will be conducting Home Fire Safety Visits in targeted areas of Springfield.

The Springfield Fire Department is training our firefighters to conduct home safety visits and providing them with the tools to install smoke and carbon dioxide alarms.

On average, 7 people die every day from home fires. And, on average, 36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day. We want to reduce these numbers.

The American Red Cross is looking to recruit about 100 volunteers to educate the community about Home Fire Safety and to help install 200 smoke detectors in areas with high fatalities due to home fires. There will be three volunteers in each group. One volunteer will be the documenter, one will be the installer and one will be the educator. The Springfield Fire Department will be present to assist with installations. We will provide all the supplies and information needed for volunteers to be successful! There will be lunch and snacks provided.

If individuals or groups have other obligations and can not volunteer the day of the event, the American Red Cross has another volunteer opportunity. On September 23, 2015 the American Red Cross will be going around the neighborhoods hanging door hangers. Volunteers 16 and up are welcome to help hang door hangers.

All help is greatly appreciated!
