The devastating storms that ripped through Macon County this week displaced families from their homes, and many people are still without power. The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter where people can stay until it's safe to go back home. We are looking for local volunteers who are willing to help support our shelter for a daytime or overnight shift this weekend. Shelter assistants help to keep a safe and comfortable environment for our residents, assisting with meal times and helping clients who need to check into or out of the shelter. We always have two volunteers work together for safety, so you would be paired with an experienced Red Cross disaster volunteer. You can read, play games, knit, etc., to keep occupied when the shelter isn't busy, and you'll just help with whatever people need. These are your neighbors and this is your community. Will you help? Volunteers must be 18+ years old and be able to pass a criminal background check. We can help you get started right away!
